Meet Alfie – the student who’s found the springboard to his career in teaching
At just twenty-years old, University student Alfie White is already a stalwart of Kings Camps and believes becoming a Red Top has played a huge part in his career ambitions.
Like many students who work on Kings Camps, Alfie is on course to become a PE Teacher. Having worked on a number of camps across the UK since joining the organisation in 2021, he hasn’t wasted a second in turning seasonal work, into valuable experience for his future plans.
Rather than stay local and become settled at one camp, Alfie has been part of the teams in Birmingham, Loughborough, Nottingham, Cambridge and on our camps for children of RNRM personnel in Portsmouth.
“No matter which camp you go to, it’s a great working environment – all the staff are really good, the kids are brilliant and it’s always fun; to be honest it barely feels like I’m working.
I’ve really gained a lot of confidence by moving around and meeting other like-minded people. Some may be students who you can share ideas with, others are that six or seven years older and already working in schools, so I can learn from them and really identify and hone my own style.
It’s really beneficial to be trusted to lead your own group too, being the coach with that group allows you to stand on your own two feet and has helped me to develop my own teaching and coaching style”
During his time with Kings Camps, Alfie has not only learned from others, but has had the opportunity to level up and support others, working as an Assistant Site Manager. He believes the emphasis Kings place on personal development is what sets the organisation apart from others.
“I’ve taken a lot from working with others who have varying levels of experience, the staff evaluations especially have been really helpful as I’ve been able to take feedback from that into my university practical assessments and continue to develop outside of Kings.
A friend of mine has recently joined Kings Camps having worked for other holiday providers previously, and the first thing he said to me was that he felt that’s there’s way more support and opportunities to develop here.
That’s a big reason why anyone who’s a student looking to gain hands-on experience and the opportunity to shape themselves should join Kings Camps. The feedback is always open, honest and is tailored towards making the best you – plus, you’ll have fun along the way!”
